This is post-decapitation, pre-plucking. Notice the fear in the eyes of all the chicken's brothers and sisters.

Mama or Obama

Tanzanians are interested in the US presidential race of 08. Their interest was not sparked by the emergence of a candidate whose father was born in the country lying on their northern border but rather their general interest in America as a whole. Every day I am involved in conversations concerning Barack and "Mama Hillary." The issue of sex sometimes comes up.

In the language of Swahili their are two words that translate to the English verb to marry: they are kuoa and kuolewa. The former literally translates as to marry (someone) whereas the latter translates as to be married (by someone). The former can be used only in reference to men and the latter only in reference to women. Hence, in Swahili, the man is the one to marry and the woman is the one to be married.

At this point I don't care to delve too deeply into cultural differences such as the standard practice of men paying a bride price, sometimes having multiple wives, or huge differences in age with men often being much older than the women they marry. It is unfair to judge a people based on a few seemingly startling cultural practices without understanding how these practices serve the needs of the community. I think it goes without saying, however, that the women's rights movement missed the boat to Africa and a good portion of the rest of the eastern and middle eastern parts of the world. Therefore I don't expect to find a high court case arguing for the ousting of the word kuolewa due to its inherent prejudice towards women shaking the foundation of Tanzania any time soon.

I will go out on a limb and say that the way women are viewed in the majority of the world is far different than the way they are viewed through most American eyes.

It just so happens that the biggest problems that the United States is facing are based in many parts of the world that see women as beings lesser than men. I'm not here to make a value judgment on the equality or lack of equality between men and women. I will argue that most people in influential positions in the middle east and the third world have more respect for men than they do for women. My definition of influential here ranges from anyone in a position to sign a peace treaty to anyone in a position to strap some explosives to his or her chest.

The idea, in these parts of the world, of a woman being the president of the most powerful nation in the world is laughable. The idea of a man, with roots to and experience in these parts of the world, becoming president is nothing less than intriguing.

When the Democrat's choose between these two candidates I hope they seriously consider how their decision will be viewed by the world. The new face of America needs to be one that can garner immediate respect and begin to rebuild broken relationships all over the world. If people are laughing at us, it may make our job much more difficult.
